GEORGE ELIOT HOSPITAL, NUNEATON, PROSECUTED HSE WARNS HOSPITALS TO
PROTECT STAFF AND PATIENTS WITH CORRECT PROCEDURES-


The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned hospitals to be
vigilant in undertaking adequate risk assessments to protect its staff and
patients after a violent attack on staff led to the George Eliot hospital
in Nuneaton being prosecuted.

The George Eliot Hospital was fined a total of £10,000 and required to
pay costs of £3,500 at Nuneaton Magistrates' Court, on Monday 10 April,
following an investigation into an incident which took place on 7
November 2004. A patient on a ward became aggressive and shut himself in a
room with another patient and threatened staff with a chair, before
breaking a window, jumping out and running away.

Commenting on the case, Angela Eley, HSE Inspector said:

"This case demonstrates the importance of proper assessments of risks
from patients presenting at hospitals, and the need to implement
precautions such as adequate individual assessments and emergency procedures
to prevent the escalation of a situation whereby it may cause injury to
members of staff or other patients."

The George Eliot Hospital was served an improvement notice in 2001 for
failings relating to violence and aggression. This improvement notice
was complied with. However in 2005 during a routine audit a number of
failings were again identified which related to violence and aggression.
