Transport Minister gives go ahead to £15million quality bus corridor in
Doncaster

Doncaster residents and visitors are set to benefit from improvements
to key bus services into the town centre after a £15m scheme was given
the go-ahead today by Transport Minister, Gillian Merron.

The scheme - Doncaster's new Quality Bus Corridor - consists of new bus
lanes on the A638 northern and southern approaches to Doncaster,
including a stretch of dedicated busway and two new Park and Ride car parks
which will be served by existing bus services.

Gillian Merron said,

"This is good news for people in Doncaster. These improvements will
give local people what they want, better access to bus services, faster
more reliable bus journeys to the city centre, getting them to jobs,
shops and healthcare far more easily. Making the bus a real alternative
to the car will also help to ease congestion, improve safety, especially
for families with young children, and make the local area a more
pleasant place to live, work and shop."

Work on the scheme will start in early 2007 and is expected to be
completed by March 2008.

24/08 Be aware of a scam -laptop computers

South Yorkshire Police - Appeal for Information - Sheffield 1
Police Offices are warning members of the public to be aware of a scam that's targeting shoppers across Sheffield to obtain money by deception.

Shoppers are being approached and asked if they would like to purchase a laptop computer at a very reasonable price. Anyone showing an interest are taken to a vehicle parked nearby and shown brand new laptops and on some occasions, mobile phones and camcorders.

The shopper is invited to make an offer for the equipment and a price is agreed. The laptop is then packed into a box in front of customer and placed in bag. At this point the bag containing the laptop is cleverly switched and the customer is given an identical bag containing nothing but newspapers or catalogues in return for their money.

Officers investigating the latest incident reported by a Sheffield man, say that a number of incidents have been reported over the last couple of weeks. Victims of this scam have handed over substantial amounts of money to these people.

PC Emily Clifford said: "We need to keep reminding the public to be on their guard against this type of scam. "You should always be suspicious if you are approached by an unknown person or anyone offering to sell this type of equipment cheap."

Scams such as these demonstrate how easy it is for criminals to obtain money by deception.

One of the offenders is described as being white male; approximately 25 years old of a slim build and was driving an off white 3-door hatchback car.

A second offender has been described as white male, approximately 5 ft 10 inches tall with light brown hair and a goatee beard, he was driving a 5 door dark red car possibly a Vauxhall.

A third offender described as being white male, with short light coloured hair and a short-cropped beard wearing a black tracksuit and driving a red car possibly a rover 214 or a metro.

If anyone has any knowledge as to the identity of these persons or can assist the Police in anyway they are asked to contact PC Emily Clifford from Sheffield West Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0114 2964385, alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously.

24/08 South Yorkshire Police - Appeal for four legged helpers

South Yorkshire Police - Appeal
As crime-busting canines celebrate a well-earned retirement, South Yorkshire Police are now appealing for replacement four legged helpers.

Many police dogs come in as donations from members of the public who have found boisterous German shepherd dogs too hard to control.

PC Clive Kenyon said: "If anyone has a fit young male German shepherd dog they wish to donate to the dog training school we would like to hear from you."

"Ideally the dogs should be between 12 and 20 months, have a confident attitude and be play motivated."

"If you have a dog that you think your dog has what it takes please contact the dog training school on 0114 2964941."
