Hello and welcome
14/05 SHROPSHIRE COMPANY HAS LINKS WITH ANCIENT EYGPT
SHROPSHIRE COMPANY HAS LINKS WITH ANCIENT EYGPTShropshire company Kamana UK Ltd is reaching new markets - with help
from UK Trade & Investment.
The company, based in the Outwoods, near Newport, makes
top-of-the-range skin care products that heal, soothe and nourish the skin, based on
ancient Egyptian remedies.
The product is truly luxurious. Customers include Harvey Nichols and
Fortnum and Mason with celebrity endorsement from Dame Helen Mirren,
Rachel Weisz, Amanda Holden and Cat Deeley.
Debbie Frost, who is the brains behind the products, started the
company with her parents in July 2003 and has been exporting for just over a
year.
The company joined UK Trade & Investment's Passport initiative - a
flagship scheme that gives new exporters the training, planning and ongoing
support they need to succeed overseas - in October 2004.
Through Passport, Kamana UK Ltd has benefited from a package of
support, including a free export health check; attending an export workshop;
assistance in formulating an international trade strategy and matched
funding to help implement this strategy; quality training and mentoring
advice; access to the full range of UK Trade & Investment services and
membership of the Midlands World Trade Forum, the regional export club.
Debbie said:
"I found out about UK Trade & Investment through their website. I had
meetings with my local International Trade Adviser and started the
Passport programme. We are now in the final stages. They helped us set up
meetings to introduce the brand overseas through British
embassies/consulates. The assistance with translation, documentation and contract
guidance has been amazing. Kamana UK would never have come so far so
quickly without this sort of help.
"I wanted to create products using the very finest ingredients and
knowing that Cleopatra was famous for bathing in asses' milk, I thought I
could learn a great deal from the ancient Egyptians. After all, they
were able to build the pyramids and even now, no one has quite worked out
why or how they were conceived and built, so they were truly
innovative!
"Our products are niche market, uniquely presented and packaged
products that really work. It was important that we expanded into other
markets as well as the UK. We now export to USA, Germany and most recently
the Ukraine and our export sales amount to 50% of the annual turnover.
We are hoping to start exporting to France in the very near future. We
would never have got so far so quickly without UK Trade & Investment."
Phil Challlinor is Head of International Trade for Shropshire Chamber
of Commerce. He has been working with Debbie for about eighteen months.
He said:
"I'm delighted by Debbie's success, which is thoroughly deserved. It
has been a pleasure working with her to develop the business. It has
been a big challenge but her commitment and belief in the products have
made this easier.
"When we began the process there were just three products, but the
range has now expanded and Debbie has some great ideas for future
expansion. We will continue working with her to develop her export business.
"Anyone interested in joining the Passport scheme can contact one of
the team at Shropshire Chamber of Commerce or look at the website,
